By far, silt fences are the most commonly used temporary sediment barrier to trap sediment in surface (sheet) flow. Silt fence is manufactured from geotextile filter fabric that allows water to pass through while trapping soil particles long enough for them to settle. Georgia has two classes of silt fence. The Sd1-S (Sensitive) fence also known as Type C silt fence.
ell as methods that have proven successful on slopes, adjacent to graded areas, sensitive and non-sensitive areas. Finally, maintenance is very important, effective methods to clean out and even improve silt fence effectiveness will be discussed.
CLASS EXERSIZE:
The attendees will be divided into small groups. Each group will be issued a piece of silt fence, (new or previously used, or damaged). Using the silt fence tray, the group will pour a quantity of sediment into the tray and discuss the respective effectiveness and reduction of turbidity after the water passing through the fabric is collected and analyzed by a turbidimeter for NTUs.
